Tokyo Olympic Games get underway with scaled-down opening ceremony today

Shillong, July 23, 2021(MMP After a year-long delay due to the Corona virus pandemic, the Tokyo Olympic Games finally gets underway with scaled down opening ceremony this evening. The mega quadrennial event began at 4.30 pm Indian time at the newly-built National Stadium in the Japanese capital. The ceremony will have none of the usual splendour and fanfare. Only about 950 people, including officials and reporters allowed to watch the ceremony in person. From India, only 24 members, comprising of six officials and 18 athletes will participate in the Opening Ceremony. Indian men’s hockey team’s captain Manpreet Singh will be the flag-bearer alongside boxer M.C. Mary Kom. NSD
