Environmental Public Hearing on proposed limestone mining for M/s Star Cement in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills District postponed

Shillong, November 21, 2020 (MMP):The proposed Environment Public Hearing on the proposed linestone and shale mining over an area of 42.051 hectares under Brishyrnot village in East Jaintia Hills District for M/s Star Cement, which was held at the Office of the Deputy Commissioners of East Jaintia Hills in Khliehriat was postponed, as violent agitators belonging to different NGOs forcibly stalled the hearing. While forcibly entering the DC’s office, the police used tear gas to control the crowd. In the in the process, seven police personal sustained injuries including women police, who was hit by stones as well few members of NGOs.                 

                    Later the Superintendent of Police along with Dy SP, Magistrate intervened into the matter to control the situation. But the NGOs managed to pass through to the public hearing stage and started damaging the properties, after which the Chairman of the Environmental Public Hearing, E. Kharmalki  postponed the Hearing. MMP
