Meghalaya Government plans to extend the term of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council

Shillong, August 26, 2020 (MMP): Meghalaya Government today plans to extend the term of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council for another six months. This was disclosed by Meghalaya District Council Affairs Minister, Hamlet Dohling. Addressing media person at the Main Secretariat in Shillong, Dohling informed that his Department will prepare a Cabinet Memorandum to extend the tenure of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council for another six months, which will be placed before the Cabinet for consideration. Dohling said his Department will do its part and it will all depend on the collective decision of the Cabinet headed by Chief Minister. The Minister informed that the Government planned to conduct to Council’s election in October this year, but with the turn of events due to Covid-19 pandemic, the best option is to extend the tenure of the Council. In this regard several members of the District Council serving in Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) had also met Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma seeking postponement of the upcoming elections.MMP
