Meghalaya Government intends to improve piggery farming

Shillong, August 20, 2020 (MMP): Meghalaya Government intends to improve the piggery farming in the state. This will be made possible with the implementation of “Piggery Mission” to be launched by Meghalaya Chief Minister soon.

                 This was disclose by officials of  Meghalaya Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department. In this endeavour, the Government of Meghalaya has decided to launch the 209 crore rupees Crore Piggery Mission to improve the economic and nutritional status of the people in the state.

          The Mission will be implemented by the newly formed Meghalaya Livestock Enterprises Advancement Society. Speaking to the media, Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma said over the next three years this Mission will enable Meghalaya to achieve self-sufficiency in pork production, reduce the state out-of-state import burden of nearly 150 crore rupees annually  and improve the incomes of over 25,000 households, totalling to an annual increment of 70 crore rupees across the state. He also said the Mission Piggery will not only transform the piggery sector, but will also reap many long-term benefit with respect to quality enhancement, skill development, value addition and input cost optimization. “Hand in hand with the people and Government of Meghalaya including MLEADS will spearhead this transformation’, Sangma said, adding that the Mission has been designed in such a way to provide long-term loans to piggery breeders through the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank.MMP
