Meghalaya Games 2020 commences at J.N. Complex in Shillong

Shillong February 17,  2020 (MMP): The Meghalaya Games 2020 commenced at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex in Shillong today amid fanfare and gaiety with a large number of spectators turning up on the inaugural day. Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K. Sangma attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest while Sports and Youth Affairs Minister of Meghalaya Sports Banteidor Lyngdoh was the guest of honour among other dignitaries. The Meghalaya Games, being conducted after a long gap of over 15 years was scheduled to be held in December, 2019 but was postponed due to the protests in the state. 

       Altogether, 1,795 athletes including 948 male and 565 female participants will be competing across 14 disciplines as part of a run up to the upcoming National Games scheduled to be held in 2022 in which Meghalaya will play hosts. The disciplines include archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, billiards & snooker, karate, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, wushu and judo. The games are being held across eight different venues in Shillong including the J.N. Sports Complex, St Anthony’s School Stadium, Nongthymmai Sports & Cultural Club, U Tirot Sing Syiem Indoor Stadium, Shillong Club, Laban SC Indoor Stadium, Crinoline Swimming Pool and Assam Regimental Centre.

      The games will act as a preparatory event for the National Games 2022, which Meghalaya has been selected to host. It will also enable the Meghalaya State Olympic Association and Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs to identify talented young athletes to represent the state of Meghalaya. MMP
