North East Student’s Organisation stages sit in protest in opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill

Shillong, November 18, 2019 (MMP): Various student bodies and other organizations under the banner of North East Student’s Organisation (NESO) staged a sit-in protest in opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in Meghalaya. Opposing the reintroduction of Bill in one voice, members of the organization shouted slogans and displayed banners and placards at the parking lot in front of the Additional Secretariat in Shillong today.

       Khasi Students Union, Federation of Khasi Jaintia Garo People, Ri Bhoi Youth Federation, Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation, Achik Youth Welfare Organisation, Shillong Socio Culture Assamese Students Association, Tripura Students Federation, Karbi Students Association, Arunachal Students Union Shillong, Shillong Manipuri students Union, All Khasi Hills Achik Federation beside few others participated in the protest.

     The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in Lok Sabha on January 8 but lapsed later as it could not be placed in Rajya Sabha. The CAB seeks to grant citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan after six years of stay in the country even if they do not possess proper documents. The protesters are determined to take the protest forward if the bill is reintroduced and intensifies it if the need be.MMP
