Shillong 15 May 2019 (MMP): Nestled amidst whispering pines, Shillong SOS Children’s Village of India, located a stone’s throw from sacred Lum Sohpetbeng Peak in Umiam Khwan area in Ri Bhoi District of Meghalaya today celebrated the ‘International Day of Families’ with a theme, “No Child Alone”. The SOS Children’s Villages of India is committed to helping children in need, those who have lost their parents or are abandoned to grow up within the security of home and family.
Under SOS they are provided a mother (caretaker) and the children are looked after by her as their own mother. The family includes eight to nine children and are provided not only food, shelter and education; but also opportunities to help them become contributing members of society. At present there are 127 families in Shillong and across all projects they have 440 families under its umbrella and take care of 26,000 children through their flagship programmes, Family based Care Programme and Family Strengthening Programme. The aim of the SOS India is to build families for children so that they grow up with love, respect, dignity and security. MMP
