Shillong, April 18, 2019 (MMP): The Catholic faithful of Shillong Archdiocese in Meghalaya today joined the Catholic world to observe the Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) to mark the beginning of the Pascal Triduum, which will end with the glorious celebration of Easter Sunday. Maundy Thursday marks the Last Supper of Jesus together with his twelve apostles before he was condemned to death on a cross. It was here that Jesus displayed his complete humility when he washed the feet of his apostles.
The day also marks the institution of the Holy Eucharistic and the Sacrament of priesthood. Maundy Thursday was observed with devotion by the faithful of Shillong Archdiocese together with the Parish priest of Mary Help of Christians, Laitumkhrah, Shillong, Rev. Julius Kurbah along with other priests of the parish, members of different religious congregations and faithful. Maundy Thursday ceremony began when the Parish Priest, Julius Kurbah dressed in clean and dignified liturgical vestments washed the feet of twelve faithful seated at the side of the altar. The washing of the twelve faithful represents the washing of the twelve apostles by Jesus Christ. At the introductory speech, Fr, Kurbah reminded the faithful of the greatest act of humility shown by Jesus by washing the feet of the apostles.
Fr. Kurbah said the washing of the feet was the most humiliating act that a person could do and Jesus did to his apostles to teach them that he came to this earth not to be served, but to serve other. One of the Assistant Parish Priests of Mary Help of Christians, delivering a homily on the occasion, termed the Maundy Thrusday as an anniversary of love, in which Jesus instituted the Sacraments of Eucharist and Priesthood. The priest said Jesus instituted these two Sacrament because he wanted to be the source of eternal life to all those who believe in him and the priesthood for offering of the Holy Mass. The Holy Thursday ended with the distribution of Holy Communion. MMP
