United Democratic Party says criminal incidents should not be linked to KHADC election

Shillong, February 26, 2019: In Meghalaya, the United Democratic Party today strongly condemned the vandalism on the vehicle of the General Secretary of Khasi Student’s Union Nongthymmai Circle, Donald Thabah by unidentified persons. Addressing media persons in Shillong, the UDP Working President, Paul Lyngdoh said the incident should not be linked to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council election. He termed the incident, as one of the criminal activities that took place in North Shillong Assembly constituency.

“The constituency is witnessing increase of drug uses, burglary and theft. He said these undesirable activities take, when there is power shut down in the constituency and blamed the Congress for this. “When I was a minister in 2007, the Congress led Government  under the leadership of  the then Chief Mukul Sangma signed many power deals with power generating companies and all of them have been scrapped because they were not viable”, Lyngdoh said, adding that it was the fault Dr. Sangma that the state has to resort to power shut down.

“Dr. Ampareen M. Lyngdoh and I cautioned Dr. Sangma on the viability of those power projects in the state and he did not pay heed to what we said”, Lyngdoh said. Criticizing the Congress of insinuating the incident with the Council’s election, Lyngdoh said he wanted that Council’s election to be held tomorrow should be conducted peacefully without any untoward incidents. When asked whether the UDP will align with the National People’s Party to form the Council’s Executive Committee, Lyngdoh said so far, no formal agreement has been made with the NPP for the formation of the Executive Committee, as the party, which has set up candidates in almost all the constituencies will form Executive Committee on its own. He however reiterate that his party will definite align only with the national parties.  MMP
