Shillong, July 13, 2018: The Vice Chancellor of William Carey University, Shillong, Dr. Anand Kumar Gupta today inaugurated the Swachh Bharat Summer Internship programme for college and post graduate students for universities and colleges in India. This programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development in association with the Ministry of Sanitation and Drinking Water and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

            The university and its NSS Unit has proposed different programmes to be taken by the students in different villages in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills District.

            The aim of the programme is to develop the skills and orientation of youth for sanitation related work, bring youth across the country an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the Swachhata revolution and integrate youth in the community service in rural areas. This will be a run up to the celebration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

            Addressing the inaugural function, Dr. Gupta urged the students to provide selfless service to the community by taking part in the 100 hours internship programme in creating awareness among the rural masses on sanitation related activities. He also said this is an opportunity for the youth to give back to mother nature in restoring its lost pristine glory.

            Speaking on the occasion, Dr. M. Roy of Environmental Management Department narrated the sad affair of floods in Shillong, which she would not experience it during her childhood days in the city. She lamented that due to poor waste management that the present generation is witnessing floods in the beautiful city of Shillong.

            Assistant Professor of the University, Dr. P.G. Jangamlung Richard has been assigned as the Nodal Officer of the entire programme and informed that the internship also comes with cash awards ranging from Rs.10,000/- to Rs.2,00,000/- , academic recognition and certificates.
